Dan Schmitz
Co-Pastor
Pastor Dan has worked with refugees and immigrants in Oakland for nearly 25 years and was part of the core individuals that formed New Hope. Besides pastoring the church, Dan is also involved in community organizing, community gardening and programs for families and youth in the neighborhood. He is married to Jan and has a creative and energetic teenage son named Peter.

Albert Olson Hong
Co-Pastor
Born and raised in the Bay Area, Albert came to Oakland out of a desire to respond to God’s love for the poor. After serving as Director of Youth Programs for Harbor House Ministries, he spent a month at a monastery and has since been trying to integrate a life of contemplation and action. He received his MA in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union and a Master of Divinity from the American Baptist Seminary of the West. He is married to Shauna and considers being a father to his three children (Alana, Kai, and Corrie) as one of his primary vocations.

Kara Groth
Associate and Co-Pastor
Kara is a native Californian, and received her Masters in Divinity from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary (where she also serves at the Coordinator for Pastoral Care). Kara has also been trained as a spiritual director at San Francisco Theological Seminary. She is married to Fred and and has the privilege of mothering her toddler son, Bethlehem (Hemmy for short).
